Welcome and welcome back. It's another amazing day in paradise. Thank you so much for being here. I'm so excited to be on this journey to become the next mayor of Raleigh, NC this year, 2024.
Sure... This is being posted on Friday, November 1. It's about 5 days before the election and early voting is going on. I'm not discouraged. I'm just going to keep pressing forward.
Before I jump into campaign content I need to say "thank you". There is a long list of people who I know and remember and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of people I don't know personally and don't remember. They ALL deserve my deepest gratitude.
Thank you. Thank You. THANK YOU!!! I thank God for you.
My young Black male superhero and I have been research assistants for God through the perils of poverty for a while now. We returned to Raleigh in August 2019 and for the last 5 years we have had the most vile, unkind, oppressive experiences AND the MOST compassionate, kind, emancipating experiences all at the hands and hearts of people.
I am who I am right now because of being unhoused. I really didn't know my power or strength or brilliance before the last five years. What I do know is that I wouldn't be who I am or where I am now if I had diminished myself to fit the expectations of the programs that are currently in place for those without housing.
So I want to be clear and say thank you to every person who has crossed our paths. No matter what kind of energy or experience you brought to me and/or my superhero, God made it for not only our good but our greatness. We prevail because of you.
I'm grateful for every unkind gesture. I am grateful for every Loving heart. I am grateful for every unkind word. I'm grateful for every kind message. There's been so much time and money invested into us and we are honored to have been the recipients.
I don't dare attempt to name names because I'll offend someone. And it's quite possible that if I don't name names that will offend someone too. Thankfully this is my blog so I get to call the shots so the ones I will name are my dad, my mom and my sister, Keya.
They've all gone to bat for me for years and years and years, still do. And I know they've done it while not agreeing with all the choices I'm making. Now that's something incredible.
My dad passed in April of this year. I had not spoken to him in over 5 years, since we left Connecticut. And the beauty in that is I feel like we've reconciled our relationship in death in a way that could have never been done in life. I'm humbled by that. He now shows himself in all kinds of ways.
My mom is... well... my mom is cool as Heaven (cuz I'm not sure why hell is so cool, literally or figuratively!). She started an internet radio station after the age of retirement. She's gonna kill me when she finds out I wrote that. I have to though because now I'm wondering... Who does that? She does!
She's been in community radio for decades. And I now have the honor of saying she interviewed me for my mayoral campaign. Not many people get a chance to be interviewed by their moms, let alone be interviewed for their mom's station.
I got my start as a radio DJ because of my mom (initially Lady K, then Wisdom's Student). So stay tuned it's possible that might be a part of my future once again. And if not me, my mom has already bestowed a DJ name on Wisdom (DJ WisD)!
He used to come to the radio station with me when he was younger. He's taking both ukulele and piano classes and he's already composed a few songs.
When our car radio was working he changed the stations and kept the music playing. He has a future as a DJ and he gets to say he started at his grandmother's online station. How many people get to have an opportunity like that? My YBMS will.
Anyways... my mom has quite the legacy she's building. And since she has 6 children and 7 grandbabies, we're just one aspect of it. So thank you Mom! I Love and deeply appreciate you.
Finally thank you to my sister who immediately follows me. She's brilliantly talented and beautiful. She's fiercely loyal too. Her deepest, truest friendships span decades. It's a humbling gift to have her as my sister. Thank you for all you do to support my wayward ways.
It's because of the foundation my parents have given me and the added layer of protection my younger sister has provided that I am where I am. And everyone else is built upon them.
Looking back, it's like the rolls are reversed. I know I was the older, more responsible child when I was younger. And my sister took over at some point.
I've often been the free spirited one but never more than now because I know who I am and Whose I am and what I'm working towards. So I'm savoring this time. I'm excited to be crazy enough to believe I'm going to be the change I want to see in the world so I can invite others to join me. Please come.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me get here, have helped US get here. OH! How could I forget? I'm going to throw in one more... I can't even believe I almost forgot this one.
Thank you Wisdom. Thank you my dynamic, charming, Loving, brilliant, emancipated young Black male superhero.
My life has been so much better since you've been in it. It continues to be an honor to be your mom and student. Thank you for all you teach me, lead me and guide me to do what's best for you. You never cease to amaze me.
Thank you again for being here. I hope what you read, see or hear will compel you to write my name as your preferred candidate for the next mayor of Raleigh. Thank you again and in advance. Enjoy the amazing day you’re creating. Peace…
